Concert Band

I have spent two years doing the set-up and lighting for the University of York’s Concert Band. This society has 2-3 concerts a year, and I have been part of the 2 man team that has ensured that every performance looked and sounded the best it could. These setups required more specific microphones and placements as they needed to balance out the loud and quiet instruments from brass and percussion to softer woodwind instruments like flutes and clarinets. For the lighting, I have grown my skills and have the responsibility of creating a fun atmosphere for the audience and signalling the start and end of each concert. During the performances, I work closely with the conductors to bring their visions to life and ensure that performers can see the sheet music.

Music Society

The University of York has a music society which holds lunchtime concerts twice a week and also runs a tiny table-style concert series. I was an assistant technician with the music society for two years and got to learn about cameras and concert lighting. These concerts had a wide range of performances from piano ensembles and flute groups. Setting up and recording these varied concerts has helped to broaden my knowledge of microphone types and placements to best capture different instruments in a concert hall set-up. For the tiny table concerts, they were much more informal and required a smaller, more portable mixing desk. This allowed me to better understand small setups and know how to make them look more minimal for the audience's sake.
